Young Parents

The Program

Dubbo School of Distance Education (DSODE) provides the opportunity for pregnant girls and young parents to continue their education in a supportive and flexible environment, tailored to meet their individual needs.

DSODE staff recognise there are many complex issues which may affect the ability of young parents to focus on their education. Our programs are designed to cater for the education and personal development requirements of these students.

How can we help?

Strategies used to support pregnant girls and young parents enrolled at DSODE include provision for the following services and activities.

  • Flexible design and delivery of lessons enabling students to study from home
  • A Pathways program of study allowing students to complete their High School Certificate over a 5 year or their School Certificate over 2 or more years
  • Phone and home-based lessons, planned around the young parent and their child’s routine, help the student to stay focussed and bypass the need for childcare

An extensive Vocational Education Program (VET) allowing young parents to complete Certificate I and II in a range of TAFE and school based HSC accredited courses

  • Regular teleconferences enabling discussions amongst young parents under the guidance of a teacher or guest speaker such as a midwife
  • Assistance in dealing with the feeling of isolation often experienced by pregnant girls and young parents
  • Workshops catering for young parents’ interests and special needs
  • Activities ranging from yoga, stress management, self-esteem enhancement and goal setting

Supportive comments about our program

From a parent supervisor…

“The program has provided fantastic support with home visits and excellent communication. The teachers are so sensitive to her needs and have encouraged her to continue with her studies.”

From a student…

“Juggling motherhood and the HSC is difficult, but with the support of the Distance Ed teachers I have managed to remain focussed most of the time.”

From a student…

“I love the teleconferences because they made me realise I am not alone and there are a lot of girls going through the things I am. I look forward to the talks, they are a kind of mothers’ group over the phone.”
