A history of the student forum at DSODE:

The Student Forum started in 2000 with sixteen members (three primary and thirteen secondary). A ceremony was held on the 5th of April with the district superintendent Mrs McKerihan attending. That week a camp was held with students from yr 5/6 Cobar and Hay coming. The first year the SF notice board was put up in the Hostel, also the SF help organised some activities at camps. In 2001 the first SF camp was at Lake Burrendong with most members coming.

During one camp some members met with Noni Hazlehurst while the rest of the forum talked with her via phone. She was there to talk about NETALERT, an internet safety awareness program. She then went on a tour of the school.

Fundraising:

In 2002, the Fundraising committee was formed and two projects were completed. The first was a Jaffa guessing competition. And the second was a car wash held on the Friday of a secondary camp. With the funds raised, the SF bought a CD player and new board games. Also that year the SF applied for the Eco School Grant to improve in and around the Hostel. Another SF camp was held with Rick Freeth attending. Mrs Small left and Miss Welbourne became the SF co-ordinator.

Projects:

In 2003, the Hostel Haven Project was formed with money from a NSW government Environmental Trust. Gardens were planted around the Hostel fences with watering systems installed, seats were put under a tree, a herb garden was planted and compost bins were bought.

Two sub-committees were developed: the Social Committee and the Sporting Committee. With the fundraising money, school hats were bought.  At the Ski excursion, a pool competition was held by the Sporting Committee with trophies presented.

A talk about the African Painted Dogs

Hostel haven project

At Muster camp a social dance was held on Thursday night, as well as a Walkathon at the Zoo raisings funds for the Zimbabwe Painted Dog.  A poetry competition was made, with the winner receiving a plaque on Muster Day. Miss Welbourne left the forum and Ms Sheldon and Miss Hughes joined. Last year another Pool competition was held.

During a secondary camp a board game was made entirely of recycled pieces which was entered in an Australia wide competition, in which the game came third. The local TV station even came down and interviewed some students.  Again at Muster Camp the end of year social dance was held with a ‘scary’ theme.
