What is Croak & Gurgle?

Dubbo School of Distance Education values our environment and Croak & Gurgle is our way of promoting awareness of environmental issues. Croak & Gurgle are two frogs who represent the survival of biodiversity in our natural environment. We promote environmental issues in our school by:

1. Newsletter - a column in our Keeping in Touch school newsletter.

This column has featured regularly in the school newsletter “Keeping in Touch” and has publicised promotional days and events like Clean Up Australia Day and Natioanl Recycling Week. There have been recycling tips, book reviews, quizzes, news reports and information about Australian endangered species.

Click here for access to the school newsletter.

2. Student forum camps (eg. Hostel Haven project). See Student Forum.

3. Guest speakers who encourage student participation in community and school environmental activities.

Student Forum projects

In 2003, there were 2 projects:

  • The ‘Hostel Haven’ project involved students identifying the aesthetic and environmental needs of the hostel surrounds. The students contributed to planning and designing seating and gardens. A ‘Herb Garden’ was established and a birdbath was added. New seating was set under trees, and shrubs were planted around the surrounding fences. Recycling in the hostel area was also introduced.

  • Fundraising took place to provide sponsorship to an international project to assist endangered Cape Hunting Dogs in Africa. John Lemon from Western Plains Zoo talked to students about his project in Africa to save this species.

In 2004, there was one project:

  • The Student Forum entered and won a runner-up prize in the National ARC Competitiion. The Australian Recycling Cardboard Company invited students from all over Australia to enter their National competition.
  • The Brief: Design and create an Environmental game that encourages recycling. Students met at school for initial planning and design decisions and then were allocated individual tasks to create the actual gameboard and pices in their own time at home. The students met up again to complete the project and play the new environmental game.
  • Check out the website: www.arc.org.au for the list of National 2004 Winners and you will see the names of the Dubbo School of Distance Education team and the other winners.
